How well do you know fire?

Victoria is facing a potentially devastating fire season.

By Mitchell Clarke

One of the largest fire campaigns in Victorian history has been launched as the state prepares for a long, hot and dry season – all potential contributors to a devastating fire season.

The ‘how well do you know fire?’ campaign is running across television, radio, print, digital, social and outdoor media to highlight the deadly risk fire poses and the importance of planning and preparing for the season.

Radiant heat from a bushfire can kill a person from 300 metres away and a single ember has the potential to start a new fire from 40 kilometres away.

The campaign material features facts and confronting imagery to ensure Victorians weren’t complacent about their personal bushfire risk, and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale welcomed the confronting approach.

“Victoria is one of the most fire-prone areas in the world and everyone needs to understand just how devastating fire can be, no matter where they live – whether it’s the outer suburbs, the coast or the country,” Ms Crugnale said.

“We simply can’t afford to be complacent – planning and preparing can be the difference between life and death, so please get fire ready.

“Our firefighters can’t do this alone. Every single one of us has a responsibility to plan and prepare for fire.”

Residents in fire prone areas are advised to download the VicEmergency app to receive emergency information and warnings.
