A community fair showcasing the various faiths within the Cardinia shire is hopeful the event will also strengthen the local community.

The Cardinia Interfaith Network (CIN) is hosting the Power of Community fair in October, with the afternoon including presentations, workshops, information stalls and food stalls.

One of the workshops on offer is a specially designed interfaith speed dating experience, providing a unique opportunity to get to know different cultures.

“The most rewarding thing to come out from this fair is the participation from our younger generation such as Minaret College Students who prepared a video to show our audiences,” CIN treasurer Shoheli Sunjida said.”Their video is based on Islam and how they are celebrating their religion despite the negativity around the world.

“We need to pass on our traditional customs and beliefs to the next generation.”

Cardinia Interfaith Network has been sending local school students to various places of worship to create awareness about other religions for a while now. This year four schools have been selected for the tours.

Founded in 2011, CIN was built with the purpose of building relationships of respect, understanding and acceptance between people of all faiths, beliefs, cultures and traditions in the Cardinia Shire Community.

The Power of Community event, which is sponsored by council, Victorian Multicultural Commission and the state government, will be held at Pakenham Secondary College on Saturday 12 October from 1pm to 4.30pm.
