Astronomy enthusiasts will congregate to Emerald Lake Park for a stargazing experience on Saturday 11 May.

Mount Burnett Observatory is partnering with Cardinia Shire Council to ‘share the wonderment of the skies’ at this free community event run by volunteers from the observatory.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Graeme Moore said this event is a great opportunity to look at the park differently.

“We all know how beautiful and unique the Emerald Lake Park precinct is, but it’s so easy to forget about the skies when you’re surrounded by such beauty on the ground! It’s a whole different perspective when we take the time to look up!” Cr. Moore said.

“This Stargazing event offers an interactive way for the community to learn about our local skies whilst exploring this beautiful park at night. We are so fortunate to have a world renowned observatory located in our Shire.

“This event allows the passionate volunteers from Mount Burnett Observatory to share their skills and knowledge in a new setting.”

Director of Astronomy Jacquie Milner said the response to the event has been very positive.

“Our public viewing nights are increasingly popular,” Ms Milner said.

“This event is another avenue to get people looking at the sky.

“We’re aiming to connect people with things from their backyard.

Mount Burnett Observatory is planning to run another event in July and make this a regular series.

Bookings are essential. Tour groups will depart from 7pm at 15 minute intervals with each tour running about two hours.
