In line with their commitment to environment and conservation, the local Sikh community planted over 150 trees at their new place of worship on Officer Road.
Volunteers from all walks of life enjoyed the plantation activity on Sunday 16 September, tagging the plants with their names in a pledge to care for the environment into the future.
The event was attended by volunteers from the Bunyip Landcare Group and Cardinia Environmental Coalition.
Planting was done on the eastern and western parts of the property, with more planting of natives and fruit trees scheduled later in the month.
Councillor Michael Schilling attended on the day.
“I joined Amy Gregorovich – Greens for Gembrook, Cardinia Environment Coalition and members from the Bunyip Landcare Group for a tree planting day at our community’s newest Sikh place of worship,” he said.
“A massive thank you to the Sikh community team for organising the day. It’s great to see this land being used to promote sustainability and good environmental practice.”
Volunteers from the Sikh community are currently in discussion with Melbourne Water and other environmental groups, seeking resources for more plantations along the creek and on the hill block on the northern fringe.
Earlier this year the community installed bird nest boxes at the property to promote bio-diversity.
