BOTH tiers of government have clashed in a game of one-upmanship, splashing out on Cardinia’s sporting facilities within hours of each other.

State Sports Minister John Erin pledged $800,000 to revitalise Kooweerup’s ageing football and netball facilities, while Federal Minister John McVeigh touted $500,000 in funding for Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve.

As part of the Holm Park project, a BMX and skate park will be redeveloped.

Labor’s Kooweerup boost comes in wake of the Demons’ ferocious start to the West Gippsland Football season, emerging as favourites to claim the flag.

According to the party, the club’s facilities have become so worn that the club’s ability to train and prepare for the big games is restricted.

“This is a big win for every player, coach, fan and volunteer involved with these proud clubs,” Mr Erin said.

“We’re upgrading both pavilions to give the Demons the facilities they deserve and the space they need to attract more members and win silverware.”

The football pavilion will be transformed with new female change rooms, while the netball pavilion will be expanded, including upgrades to change rooms and bathrooms across the reserve.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said it was a win for the Kooweerup community.

“We’re proud to be giving the grassroots clubs in Kooweerup the support they need to keep on top of their rivals and help more locals than ever play the sports they love,” she said.

In response, Mr McVeigh – along with La Trobe MP Jason Wood – held a forum in Beaconsfield for local clubs to advice of the grants and funding processes.

A turnout of about 100 community members filled the Holm Park Reserve function centre to pitch their ideas and gain some insight.

In justifying the need to upgrade community sports facilities, Mr McVeigh said between five and six families are moving to the region every day.

“We’re focusing on providing facilities such as this for the families who are moving here every day,” he said.

“The intent behind all of these (funding) programs is economic development and job creation.

“Nothing works better than when you have local, state and federal government all working together.”
