REVIEW – ROUND 3 (SPLIT ROUND)

It’s always risky business to mark rash judgements on sides so early in the season but this is for sure, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren will be up to their eyeballs in the race for the A Grade premiership in 2018.

In the only clash over the weekend due to the split round because of Anzac Day, the two sides battled it out in front of a massive crowd at Holm Park, with the home side winning by eight goals, 42-34.

Both teams have been in electric form in the early stages of the season, coming in to the clash undefeated and in desperation of some early bragging rights.

As expected, the Magpies started with some terrific intensity around the ball, and used all their smarts and talents to immediately put the Eagles under the pump without valuable stars Ashleigh Gill and vice-captain Bianca Sanzaro.

Danielle Fedel played a starring role in their absence in a tremendous display that earnt here the Anzac Day medal, and was supported ably by Tania Mijovic and wing attack Rylee Nelson, who seamlessly transitioned the ball into attack with some brilliance all game. While it’s still early in the season, the Eagles’ defence looks rock solid, with Kaela Hughes and Zoe Mason helping link up the two ends of the ground superbly.

Beaconsfield weren’t so lucky in B Grade, going down 46-47 to the Magpies in a tense thriller, while in C Grade Narre Warren won 22-31 and in D Grade the Eagles flexed their muscles to win 46-23.

Looking ahead to the rest of the round, ROC hosts Pakenham at home on Anzac Day while Tooradin-Dalmore and Cranbourne battle it out on the same day in what will be a highly anticipated showdown. Berwick then welcomes Doveton to Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday 28 April to finish off the round.

The SEFNL Interleague squad has also been announced, with the initial 33 person squad to take on AFL Yarra Ranges on 19 May. There are plenty of stars to keep an eye on, such as Erin Clark, Ashleigh Gill and Hayley Stewart, in what looks to be a highly impressive squad of players.

The SEFNL seniors will be coached by Pakenham’s Karen Meredith while Matt Cooke will coach the Under 17’s.
