It’s easy to love Simon

Love Simon is a 2018 teen romantic comedy about a 17-year-old kid named Simon living a totally normal, average life apart from his one huge-arse secret – he’s gay.
Calm down, I’m not giving anything away, it’s in the trailer – let go of your pearls Nancy.
Simon (Nick Robinson) starts the movie as a relatively well adjusted, somewhat awkward high school student with a solid close-knit friends group.
At this stage he is so far in the closet he’s not far from Narnia. He has no reason to be in the closet, but he has no reason to come out either.
But things start to change when a closeted gay kid from their school posts about his experiences on the town’s anonymous confession online board and Simon in a jolt of bravery/stupidity and general youthful anxious confidence decides to start emailing him.
And we go on a journey to find out just who it is Simon is talking to/falling for.
Trailers and the general synopsis don’t make this movie seem like much, especially to skeptical youths like me but the heart, relationships and realism of the interactions between the characters makes this film really shine.
It is that heart that makes this more than just your usual teen movie or some art-house film of a gay kid.
The humour is very Millennial/Gen Z so be prepared for not being sure if you should be laughing or internally cringing as you think in your head ‘Oh my God I’ve been there’.
