Top end holds its prices

Demand was firm to stronger in most categories at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange last Wednesday, and with the Christmas break coming up vendors supplied a larger yarding of 537 head which consisted mainly of vealers with 366 penned.
Quality was good and the better prices remained steady over the top end pens.
Bullock numbers still remain down making it hard for buyers to obtain stocks.
Heifer numbers increased and sold to the highest demand rise, steer pens were firm, but some lighter pens eased the steer average.
Twenty bullocks topped at 268.6 cents, back two cents, and averaged 246.9 cents, back three cents, 64 heifers topped at 285.2 cents, up 21 cents, and averaged 249.5 cents, up 17 cents.
Seventy eight steers topped at 286.6 cents, back 14 cents, and averaged 251.7 cents, 366 veal topped at 330 cents, back nine cents, and averaged 284 cents, firm.
This week’s yard average was 269.8 cents.
The bull sale on Thursday saw similar numbers to the previous week with 29 yarded.
The top was 279.2 cents, easier by four cents, and the bull average was 232 cents.
Cow numbers increased to 423 head and slightly easier demand resulted in the top and average prices both easing two cents, with the best price being 243.2 cents and the cow average was 205.9 cents.
