Firies need more numbers

New CFA volunteers are sought by local brigades.

By Bonny Burrows

Cardinia Shire’s rural fire brigades are seeking new recruits to join the ranks.
Lang Lang, Bayles and Heath Hill fire brigades are now recruiting, and are holding volunteer information sessions in July for those interested in joining their local CFA.
Casual workers, university students, stay-at-home mums and other community members who have some time up their sleeve during the work day are particularly sought after by the brigades, who struggle to respond to daytime responses due to member work commitments.
While fighting fires and protecting communities is the primary role of CFA volunteers, who are on call 24 hours a day, there is also a need for a wide range of skills and services at all stations, including administration, community engagement and fund-raising.
All volunteer training from fighting fires to station organisation is provided by the CFA so the only thing volunteers need to bring is their time and commitment.
Anyone who has ever thought about volunteering or just wants to know more is encouraging to come along to an information session.
Lang Lang locals have the choice of two sessions – one on 2 July at 10am and another on 4 July at 7.30pm. Both will be held at the Lang Lang Fire Station, Roseberry Street, Lang Lang.
Interested Bayles residents can head along to their local fire station at 660 Kooweerup-Longwarry Road, Bayles, on 9 July at 10am or 11 July at 7.30pm to meet the brigade’s members and learn more.
Health Hill Fire Brigade will hold its two information sessions on 26 July at 7.30pm or 30 July at 10.30am at the station, on Mt Lyall Road, Heath Hill.
All are welcome.
