KOOWEERUP trainer Terry Burns had his first win in the $30,000 Cranbourne Cup on Monday night as Arvo’s Florence crossed the line first from a box seven start.
The Kooweerup trainer began racing 25 years ago, but only recently returned to the sport after an extended break.
Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club manager Tony Wright said Arvo’s Florence did a great job to get the lead and stay ahead on the straight.
“Arvo’s Florence was lucky to come across from box seven without interference and take the lead coming out of the first turn,” Wright said.
“Once he got clear down the back straight, he was able to hold on to win by about three lengths.”
“He had an excellent return of $9.10, considering he was the fastest heat winner.”
Second place went to Cranbourne trainer Darren McDonald with his runner Ultra Rumble coming in three lengths behind the winner.
With a winning time of 30.17 Arvo Florence fell short of the race record (29.68) set by Pororoca in 2006.
Wright said the Australia Day-themed event was a success, with an expected crowd of about 1000 turning out to enjoy a night of free entertainment and racing.
“There was a great atmosphere with children enjoying the rides and games as well as signing along to their favourite Australian songs,” Wright said.
“The Punter’s Club also had a great night with a $70 return.”
