Gelding’s day in the Sun

TYABB resident Lyn Tolson has taken out the feature race at Saturday’s Kids Day Out with a narrow win by her gelding Delago Sun at the Pakenham Racecourse.
The five-year-old held of Stormulator and Blaze Adrift to win by half a length and claim her maiden Cardinia Shire Cup on a well-prepared track that had been upgraded to a good three a few hours before.
The win was the highlight of the day for local enthusiasts who can be forgiven for not recognising the complete list of winners.
The day started off well for the locals with Devon Meadows trainer Nevin Eades riding Buster McGee to a win in the first race but there was little other reason for celebration as all except two of the races were won by outside trainers.
On a day when local trainers failed to find their feet, Yarra Glen trainer Mark Ashton had a day to remember when he took out the Gazette Cup handicap.
In the feel-good story of the day Ashton, who has had only the one win in his three years as a trainer but has managed eight second placing’s, was “absolutely stoked” with his win on the back of Nanbrooke Nic.
Nanbrooke Nic cleared the line by no more than a nose in front of Tarawera to claim his first win since October 2008 and avoid another second placing.
