Songwriters in spotlight

A local band will make its mark in the music industry once again when they release yet another hit single.

The duo singers/songwriters, known as ‘Souly Us’, will introduce the track ‘Alive’ to iTunes, Spotify and Apple Music on 20 September.

Former Berwick resident Ben Mawdsley started writing the song a while back with Kate Appleyard.

Written by two people with many stories to tell, one evening Mr Mawdsley was fiddling around with his Maton EM125C in his lounge room when a riff came out of nowhere.

By the end of the night the chords were set and the lyrics were written – a song was born.

“The chords just came out of nowhere. But right when I had them I knew this could be a great song,” Mr Mawdsley said.

“Kate put pen to paper and before we knew it, we had a song – a song that would lift anybody’s spirits.

“It didn’t take us long to realise the song ‘Alive’ had to be the title track of our debut album. It was perfect.”

Mr Mawdsley says the song is about arriving at a time in your life when you feel immense happiness, love and freedom.

‘Alive’ indulges listeners with its full-of-life, energetic and powerful music and lyric structure.

“The chorus is enough to make anyone want to spread their wings and fly, encouraging the feeling of absolute freedom,” he said.

“We are human, we all go through hardships and dark times, and then there are the moments that make us so happy. Life is a rollercoaster.

“We must remember to be thankful for the times that make us smile, the times that make us light up and feel immense happiness, the times we feel ‘Alive’.”

Ms Appleyards said she pictured herself standing, staring into the distance and watching the waves break against the shore when she was writing the lyrics.

“I was thinking about what life had dealt me so far, and where I am today,” she recalled.

“I am so thankful to be here living this life. We wanted this feeling to come through in the song.”

The album is available for pre-order on the Apple iTunes store.

“We ask people to give this album a chance. We have no doubt you’re going to love it as much as we do,” Mr Mawdsley added.

“This is a project we have worked for months on end with and we are so excited to get it out into the world and see where the journey takes us.”
