Rock ‘n’ roll renditions had residents up and dancing at Evergreen Retirement Village’s first Morning Melodies.
Local entertainer Little Lee had the whole room singing along as she performed popular hits from artists such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Dusty Springfield at the Thursday 14 September event.
“Music is good for the spirit and good for the soul,” Leatrice Shipsides, who performs as Little Lee, said.
Before performing as Little Lee, Leatrice had supported the likes of Daryl Braithwaite and been in many bands.
It wasn’t until her daughter started working in aged care that she got into this type of performing.
“It was actually my daughter who got me doing the aged care performance rounds.
“Since I started doing this I haven’t looked back. It brings me so much happiness and joy to see the residents enjoying the music.
“It’s as much for my soul as it is for theirs.”
Morning Melodies organiser Sharyn Allsopp was thrilled about the success on the day.
“I owe a big thank you to Shirley Phelan. Shirley did all the cooking and donated all of the door prizes.
“I honestly couldn’t have done it without her,” Sharyn said.
Morning Melodies will now be hosted at Evergreen Retirement Village every second month.
“We’ll have a different theme each time. This one was rock ‘n’ roll and the next one will be different again.
“Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be a resident, just come and enjoy the music!”
Tickets are only $5 and include morning tea and entertainment from a local performer.
