Quality drags down prices

There were about 280 export and 250 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange this week representing an increase of 50 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a cheaper market.
Quality was very mixed with some excellent grass and grain finished lots down to a few plainer secondary cattle on offer.
A handful of well finished and weighted vealers sold firm.
Yearling trade steers eased five to 10 cents with the heifer portion off three cents to four cents.
Secondary and plainer young cattle were harder to sell with little demand from processors and averages up to 15 cents cheaper.
Well finished grown steers and bullocks improved a few cents for a limited selection while secondary lots eased up to 14 cents.
Vealers to butchers sold from 300 cents to 335 cents, yearling trade steers made between 280 cents and 330 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold between 270 cents and 315 cents, grown steers made from 274 cents to 296 cents, bullocks sold from 275 cents to 296 cents, and heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made between 255 cents and 260 cents with the crossbred portion between 252 cents and 280 cents.
