A Pakenham childcare centre’s fund-raiser supporting cyclist safety in memory of Sergeant Ken Rich, who died in a tragic Good Friday accident, was an “overwhelming success”.
On 27 May, an estimated 150 community members, including Sergeant Rich’s family, enjoyed a community day at Ryan Road Childcare Centre, raising money for the Amy Gillett Foundation.
Amy Elizabeth Gillett was an Australian track cyclist and rower who, like Sergeant Rich, was tragically killed in a cycling accident and the foundation, named in her honour, works with all levels of government, road authorities, corporate, motoring, cycling and community safety organisations and the public to create a safer bike riding environment.
The fund-raiser at the weekend included pony and Harley Davidson rides, face painting, a balloonist, clown, market stalls and a sausage sizzle to keep the hunger at bay.
Coinciding with the centre’s open day, the fund-raiser was organised by staff, who were touched by Sergeant Rich’s death and aware of the need for greater road safety.
Centre director Jane Rowland, whose husband is a keen cyclist, said it was especially special to have the deceased officer’s family in attendance in support of the cause.
“It was just wonderful. We raised close to $700 which is really good for just a gold coin donation,” Ms Rowland said.
“I’m very, very happy with the outcome and am already thinking of doing something at the end of the year, like a market night.”
