Cardinia Shire residents may notice a few more shaved heads around town following the conclusion of the World’s Greatest Shave.
The Leukaemia Foundation is wrapping up its annual March fund-raiser for another year which saw thousands of Australian lose their locks in support of cancer research.
Local participants including Andrew Daley and Janette Lind raised thousands of dollars each after being touched in one way or another by cancer.
For Andrew it was losing his mother to leukaemia 30 years ago while Janette was inspired to lose all 94 centimetres of her hair as she was “sick and tired of kids getting the awful disease”.
Taking the plunge on 21 March, Andrew – once known for his hair – was almost unrecognisable.
The Simplot worker raised more than $2400 for the foundation, smashing his goal of $1500.
Janette lost her locks on 18 March but will keep fund-raising until 30 June.
She, too, has surpassed her goal of $2000 with her funds sitting at more than $2300.
A spokesperson for the Leukaemia Foundation said the World’s Greatest Shave was one of the country’s biggest fund-raisers and that it supported more than 60,000 Australians with blood cancer.
