FOLLOWING three break-ins since 2009, members of the Pakenham Bowls Club were thrilled to receive a grant to update their club’s security.
Minister for Crime Prevention and Eastern Victoria MP Edward O’Donohue announced a grant of more than $4000 at the bowls club last Friday, which would allow the club to upgrade lighting.
“I was sorry to hear that the Pakenham Bowls Club has been broken into on three occasions since 2009, with thieves taking machinery, equipment and cash,” Mr O’Donohue said.
“The club has also reported multiple incidents of vandalism including broken windows and graffiti.”
Mr O’Donohue also added that the bowls club is home to many other user groups including the organ club, Probus club, church groups and the Kooweerup Motorcycle Club.
“This funding will be used to install nine sensor security lights around the perimeter of the building, enhancing natural surveillance from the road.”
He said he hoped the lighting will help deter future damage and create a more secure environment.
The project was one of 166 community safety initiatives, sharing in $1 million in funding as part of the latest round of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Community Safety Fund Grants.
Mr O’Donohue said the government was enabling communities to fund local crime prevention initiatives that will deliver safer communities.
“Everyone needs to play their part, and we can all take some simple steps to secure our own property and get involved in local community action to help drive down crime.”
